CONSULTANCY

Why do I need Health and Safety advice and how can I make my business compliant?

All businesses no matter how small are required by law to comply with Health and Safety legislation. In the current climate, it is very hard for any company to ensure that they spend the time and resources on achieving this compliance. You are required by law to have a competent person, what makes someone competent? Knowledge, ability, training and experience. To achieve this, as a business owner, you must appoint your competent person and ensure they are competent, they are given enough training to do the job properly and are given enough time in the working day, to keep themselves up to date with any changes in legislation, complete paperwork and keep your business compliant.
There are 2 ways of doing this.

  1. Recruit or designate a member of internal staff to complete these tasks, thinking about the training they require, time to complete, and regular retraining to keep up with any changes. Positives for this – in house health and safety on tap, negatives – cost of training, retraining, time spent away from other tasks to complete h&s tasks, national insurance payments, tax.

  2. Outsource your health and safety to external body, positives – no NI or tax implications for member of staff, external person already trained, and up with current legislation. Does not take anyone away from his or her normal day to day work. Negatives – business owner must ensure that the consultant chosen is qualified and suitable to deliver the service. Referral to the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register for pre-vetted competent person.
